Last weekend I was invited to join the folks at One Acre Farm to document their Spring Farm Tour. Located in Dickerson, Maryland, One Acre Farm provides fresh, certified naturally grown vegetables to DC locals.
Although I have driven by One Acre Farm many times, I've never taken the opportunity to check out one of their farm tours. I was immediately impressed with how many people arrived to take advantage of the tour (the day was brutally hot) and how many were families with children. Joe Long entertained children and adults with information about his bees, who have a large hive and help to pollenate the farm, and their honey. There were also treats, tees and other goods available for purchase. The farm itself is lovely and the tour was packed with information on what they grow and how they prioritize soil health and conservation. All of their produce is Certified Naturally Grown, meaning that they don't use synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms.
One Acre Farm doesn't distribute their goods at Farmers Markets or stores, instead they offer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) memberships where those who purchase a share receive fresh weekly produce directly from the farm. One of the many things I love about where we live in Montgomery County's Agriculture Reserve is the ability to easily take advantage of CSA's that enable you to eat sustainable seasonal food - and to see exactly where that food was grown!
Check them out - their 2021 CSA is currently open for enrollment!
