When I fell in love with family films, I imagined being able to add drone footage to the experience. When I mentioned it to my assistant Fin, he immediately agreed to learn to pilot. Fortunately my husband is a hobbyist who agreed to share his drone with us. All of his video game experience paid off and Fin was able to learn quickly how to maneuver.
We shot our first drone footage about this time last year and it turned out even better than I hoped! As an unexpected bonus, bringing a drone along proved to be a big hit with the children too.
We're both still learning together what shots work the best but I am in LOVE with the added perspectives that a drone can offer. I knew it would shine for films, but I'm also really enjoying some of the moments he is able to capture from above. The behind the scenes shots are pretty fun too!
We're both dreaming of an upgrade someday soon as our current drone is a bit on the older side and I can't wait to see what he'll be able to capture with better tools.
Currently adding drone photos and film is included with a family film package. I'm hoping in 2022 we'll be able to offer drone work to every session as an a la carte addition to any photo session. Did you know that if you'd like to charge for drone photography you need to be FAA certified? Lots of work ahead!
So what do you think? Would you choose to add drone footage to your session?
